how to: mix the food coloring

Halloween is all about orange and black.

If you’re like me and only have red-yellow-green-blue food coloring, then some color mixing will need to occur to get the desired colors.

Using separate glass bowls we’ll start by creating orange and black.

Orange: mix 20 drops red and 12 drops yellow

Black: mix equal drops red, blue, and green (about 15 each)

how to: make orange and black icing

Divide one store-bought container of white frosting into two microwave-safe bowls.

Add approximately 1 tsp of orange food coloring to one bowl and 1 tsp of black food coloring to the other bowl.

Stir thoroughly.

Not much food coloring is needed since the frosting is white! Slowly add more if more is needed for your batch.

how to: make the batter

Prepare a store-bought cake mix according to the instructions on the box.

Use a spice cake mix for an extra fall-themed cake, or a white cake mix for the most vibrant colors.

Divide the cake mix equally into two bowls.

Add the rest of the orange food coloring to one bowl and the remaining black food coloring to the other bowl.

Stir until thoroughly mixed.

How to: Assemble the cake

Heavily grease a 10-inch bundt pan.

Carefully pour cake batter into the bundt pan, alternating between orange and black. Do not mix!

Bake according to the instructions on the box (approximately 30 minutes at 350 degrees F).

Let cool completely and flip the pan upside down to remove it.

How to: Decorate the Spooky Halloween Bundt Cake

Prepare the icing for drizzling by quickly heating up in the microwave.

After about 30 seconds in the microwave the icing should be very thin and liquidy. Let cool if you desire a thicker icing.

Using two spoons drizzle the icing all across the cake, alternating between the orange and black. (I only use about half of the icing and store the rest in the fridge!)

Decorate with candy googly eyes while the icing is soft for an extra spooky flare!

  2. Looks like a fun cake indeed. We don’t celebrate Halloween as such in NZ (no trick or treating) but we did used to have family fun dinners on Halloween and make all the foods a little creepy 🦇🎃👻

I’d never heard of a bundt cake before. The last time I made a cake using food dye it was when I was at school when I use to make rainbow cakes, accept I’d use too much food dye which would cause other things to change colour. Red was concerning if you’d forgotten you’d have the red slice of the rainbow cake ha ha ha
